Champions League betting – Matchday 6 – part 1
Tuesday, December 9th, 2008It’s the final round of matches in the Champions League this week and there are plenty of betting opportunities, despite the fact that plenty of teams have already achieved qualification to the last sixteen.
In Group A, Chelsea are in fact not one of those teams who have secured a safe passage into the next round and they must get a victory at home to Romanian outfit CFR Cluj. Totesport go best price 20/1 about Cluj getting a win at Stamford Bridge and it looks as though the home win at 1/7 is the one to get on. The draw is 6/1.
Bordeaux hold the key to who else can progress into the next round. An away win at Roma will see them leapfrog the Italians and possibly relegate them to a UEFA Cup place if Chelsea win in the other fixture. Bordeaux (4/1) lost 3-1 at home against Roma earlier in the campaign and Roma have followed that up with a good home win versus Chelsea so they’re worthy favourites at 8/13. The draw is available at 12/5 with totesport.
Liverpool are the only other English representative playing tonight in Group D. Although already securing qualification with a game in hand, Rafa Benitez will want to top the group to ensure a second leg home tie in the last sixteen against a runner up from one of the other groups. Tonight’s opponents PSV are still playing to reach the UEFA Cup ahead of Marseille and are a good price at 7/5 to do so. The draw is a 23/10 shot and Liverpool are best price 7/4 with totesport.
The other game in Group D sees Marseille hosting Atletico Madrid. Dependant on how seriously Madrid take this a win is very possible and at 9/4 you can fill your boots. Marseille have a similar incentive to PSV and can be backed at evens, with the draw a 9/4 shot.
In Group B, three teams are still in with a shot of qualification. Inter (17/10) currently head the group and a point away against bottom of the table Werder Bremen (13/10) should be enough. You can back the draw at 11/5.
In the other match, probably the tie of the night sees Panathinaikos (8/15) of Greece play Anorthosis (9/2) of Cyprus slugging it out for that remaining last sixteen spot. The Greeks bailed themselves out of a difficult situation by getting an unlikely win in the San Siro versus Inter in the last round of matches so they’ll be looking to take advantage against the season’s surprise package Famagusta. The draw will see Panathinaikos through and you can back it at 5/2 with totesport.
Finally, Group C is a dead duck in terms of qualification to the last sixteen and the UEFA Cup last thirty-two. Barcelona are a 1/2 chance to continue their excellent run of form with a win at home to Shakhtar (5/1) and Sporting Lisbon can get another three points to continue their good campaign with a win away at group C whipping boys Basel (6/4) at 6/4. You can back the draw in either game at 13/5 and 11/5 respectively with totesport if the mood takes you!
