Champions League betting – Quarter Finals
Wednesday, April 8th, 2009Tonight is undoubtedly the more attractive half of the quarter final draw in the Champions League as Liverpool play Chelsea at Anfield and Barcelona welcome Bayern Munich to the Nou Camp.
Two score draws were played out in the first two quarter-finals last night which arguably puts Arsenal and Porto in the box seat for the return ties in a fortnight’s time.
Tonight however, we’re treated to another episode in the Liverpool v Chelsea show as the two teams meet in the knockout stages for the third time in four seasons. This stat is made even more remarkable considering that the remaining year they met each other in the group stages!
Liverpool lead the ties two wins to one (two goalless draws were played out in the 2005-2006 group stages), winning once on penalties. So what’s in store for us this time? Well Chelsea will treat playing at home in the second leg as a bonus and they’ll be confident of going through. Liverpool on the other hand have been on fire in recent weeks, with demolition jobs on Real Madrid, Man United and Aston Villa in the past month.
Looking at the head to head, Chelsea have a pretty good record against Liverpool, winning thirteen of their last 25 meeting (4 were draws) in the Premier League. Liverpool just edge their Champions League head to head record based on that Penalty shoot-out win in the 2007 semi-final. Liverpool have however won both matches versus the Blues this season and this tie won’t hold any fear for them.
Liverpool are 13/10 to win tonight’s match with totesport with Chelsea a 12/5 chance and 2/1 the draw. Chelsea are slightly favoured by the bookies in the to qualify market though as they’re a 10/11 shot opposed to Liverpool’s 4/5.
In tonight’s other quarter final Barcelona host a Bayern Munich side smarting from a 5-1 away defeat to Wolfsburg at the weekend. Bayern have cruised through to the quarter finals stage but are struggling domestically in what is turning out to be a really competitive Bundesliga title race.
Barcelona on the other hand are cruising at the top of La Liga, having scored 52 goals at home in the league so far equating to an average of 3.42 goals per game. The bookies make Barca favourites here, despite Bayern’s demolition 12-1 aggregate win over Sporting Lisbon in the previous round. Barca are 4/7 to win the tie tonight and 2/7 to progress into the semi-finals. If you fancy the Germans they’re 5/2 to qualify and a huge 7/1 to win tonight. The draw is a 3/1 chance.
Totesport will be betting live in-running on both of these matches tonight.
