Premier League Weekend Betting Preview – 10th Jan
Friday, January 9th, 2009It seems like an age since the last round of Premier league betting opportunities but we’re back in style this weekend.
First off in the early Saturday kick off is the West Midlands derby between Aston Villa (2/5) and West Brom (15/2). Neither team impressed against lower opposition in last weekend’s FA Cup, but have good recent records in the league. Villa are unbeaten in six games but they have drawn three of their last four games at Villa Park. Meanwhile, West Brom have put a dreadful run of results behind them winning three on the bounce and will be fiered up for this one. The draw looks the bet for us in this one and can be backed at 10/3 with totesport.
Arsenal (4/11) host Bolton at the Emirates and although the Gunners have five consecutive wins in a row under their belts against Bolton in all competitions, the loss of Cesc Fabregas and now William Gallas really weakens the team. If Gary Megson’s team have enough ambition about them; and they should do after three wins in their last five away matches, they could cause an upset here and at 8/1 with totesport it looks a tasty bet. Arsenal struggled to put Pompey away a fortnight ago and can be taken on here, the draw a best price 7/2 with totesport.
The big question is whether the wheels have well and truly come off the Hull City bus as they travel to Everton on Saturday. After defeats in their last three Premier League matches, including a demoralising loss to Man City at Eastlands you’d be well advised to oppose, but with Everton’s questionable home form and Hull’s away record they could well spring a result here and the 5/1 about their chances looks good value at totesport. Everton (8/13) are on a good run but have struggled at home in front of their own fans and could be opposed here. The draw is 13/5.
Fulham will be looking to continue their terrific form at Craven Cottage and put an end to Blackburn’s (5/2) mini-revival under Sam Allardyce. Both teams look a little bit lightweight in attack but if we were to plumb for either it’d be Roy Hodgson’s men at 21/20 with totesport. Presuming want-a-way striker Roque Santa Cruz doesn’t take part, Fulham should have enough with the likes of Danny Murphy and Jimmy Bullard pulling the strings in front of a solid back five. The draw is 12/5.
The north-east derby sees to struggling teams battling it out for three points at the Riverside. Middlesbrough are winless at home in five matches now and are skirting with the relegation zone, albeit only two points behind Saturday’s opponents Sunderland. Totesport look happy to lay the home side here as they go best price Boro (5/4) and the draw (12/5) and you can back Sunderland to take the points at 21/10 with the north-west firm.
Staying in the north-east, another relegation threatened team look to put some points between them and the relegation zone. Newcastle’s form had improved but after two straight defeats, including a home thrashing against an understrength Liverpool side last time out at St James’s there’ll be some trepidation as they welcome West Ham. The Toon are as big as 11/10 for this one with the draw a best price 12/5 with totesport. West Ham (12/5) have their own problems but two straight wins has rocketed them up to tenth in the league and they’ll be looking for a third straight victory here.
Portsmouth and Manchester City do battle on the south coast and they’re 8/5 each a two with totesport in the betting. Pompey have not only lost four on the bounce in the Premier League, but also the influential Lassanna Diarra to Real Madrid and Jermain Defoe to Spurs in the transfer market. City also have their own problems and come here off the back of an abject display at home to Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup last weekend and without top player Stephen Ireland to suspension. The draw is a 12/5 with totesport and looks the bet to us.
Saturday’s late kick-off game sees Stoke host Liverpool at the Brittania Stadium. This should be an away banker but at time of writing Rafa Benitez is ranting to high heaven about Alex Ferguson, so perhaps the effect of this outburst could persuade a few of you to have a nibble at Stoke at 15/2 or the draw at 2/5 with totesport. It’ll be a fiery atmosphere as always in the Potteries but Liverpool can be backed at 2/5 if you dare with totesport.
There’s a double header on Sunday afternoon from the north-west as Spurs and Chelsea make the trip north to do battle with Wigan and Manchester. The main event of course is the clash at the JJB as my Spurs look to convert some of their cup form into some much needed league points. It’s not going to be easy though as Wigan (7/5) are on the back of a four game winning run at home and Spurs (9/5) have found away wins hard to come by. Perhaps new/old signing Jermain Defoe can unlock the door and he can be backed at 9/1 to score two or more goals against the Latics. The draw is 12/5.
The support act on Sunday sees the top of the table clash between Manchester United and Chelsea and if I can remove tongue from cheek for a moment I’ll let you know the betting. United are a 5/4 chance to close the gap on Chelsea and have not dropped any points at home since the opening match of the season at Old Trafford. Although Chelsea (11/5) have the best away record in the league, their record against the other ‘big 4′ this season under Phil Scolari makes depressing reading for Chelsea fans. The draw is a best price 9/4 with totesport.
Totesport will be betting live in-running on all the weekend’s live football
