Premier League Weekend Betting Preview – 17th Jan 09
Friday, January 16th, 2009It seems to have been a crazy week in the world of Premier league football and at time of writing, I’m not sure who’s going to play for who come the weekend. I’ve tried to put that out of my mind though and deliver the odds and form to help catch yourself a bet at totesport.
First off we have Blackburn Rovers hosting Newcastle at Ewood Park. This should be one for the purists, with both teams struggling it could be a real dogfight. I know which general I’d want on my side in such circumstances and Big Sam has yet to taste defeat for his new club. His Rovers team are a 11/10 shot here versus a Newcastle side devoid of confidence and possibly a manager on the sidelines. The Geordies are 12/5, as is the draw which is probably the safest bet. It won’t be pretty!
Manchester United (4/9) have had a splendid week with wins versus Chelsea and Wigan at Old Trafford, which has catapulted them into second place in the Premier League, just two points behind arch-rivals Liverpool with a game in hand. They travel to Bolton (7/1) with a few injury worries and they look worth opposing, the draw being a 3/1 shot. No Rooney or Tevez means they’ll have to rely on Ronaldo and Berbatov to score the goals. Aww, bless!
Chelsea restored some normality to procedures with a confident second half performance seeing off Southend in the FA Cup. They host Stoke at Stamford Bridge in what should be a foregone conclusion, but we did say that last week when they took two points off of Liverpool. Stoke are 14/1 with totesport and the draw is 9/2. Probably best to stick Chelsea in your multi’s at 2/9.
With all the commotion surrounding Manchester City this week, you’d think they’d up their game at home versus Wigan on Saturday. Earlier in the season you’d have snapped the arms off the evens offered by totesport for the home win but with Wigan on a tremendous run, Wednesday’s single goal defeat at Old Trafford besides, but Steve Bruce’s men can heap more misery on his old team-mate with an away win here at 11/4. Well, miserable until Kaka turns up on the doorstep! The draw is 12/5.
Sunderland (2/1) host top four wannabes Aston Villa (13/10) in what looks like a tight match-up. I’m of the opinion that Villa have been lucky this season and a goal here or there could well have left them in mid-table mediocrity, dare I say where they belong. Martin O’Neill, motivator extrordinaire he may be, messiah he ain’t and his hit and hope tactics will put pay eventually. Four straight away wins for Villa against a semi-resurgent Sunderland, at the Stadium of Light equals draw for me, at 12/5 with totesport.
West Brom could lift themselves off the bottom with a win at home to Middlesbrough. Two straight wins at home for the Baggies and three straight defeats away for Boro means the home team have favourtism at 13/10. Boro are bottom of the form table and despite steadying the ship with a home draw versus Sunderland last week are desperate for the points. You can back Boro at 21/10 or the draw at 9/4 with totesport. Too close to call we say and best left alone.
Saturday’s evening kick-off sees Hull host Arsenal at the KC Stadium at 17.30. Arsenal (4/6) have kept a hold of Villa’s coat tails scraping two 1-0 wins at home in recent weeks, but with the wheels seemingly flying off the axis of the Hull Premier League Train, they should have enough quality to pick the Tigers off. Hull (9/2) welcome the Gunners off the back of four straight defeats in the League and the signing of Kevin Kilbane shouldn’t have the Arsenal defence quivering here. The draw is 5/2.
It’s a right old cockney knees up at Upton Park as East London meets West London in the Sunday lunchtime kick-off. It looks as though Craig Bellamy has thrown his once monthly strop and had a transfer request. It remains to be seen how that effects a Hammers team who are unbeaten in three matches and a 6/5 prospect here with totesport. It’s all smiles at Fulham (11/5) however, with Woy Hodgson turning his Cottagers into a solid unit who are unbeaten in six, albeit five of them dwaws. Another draw here is 12/5, sorry Roy!
Light blue touch paper and retire. Spurs (7/10) welcome Portsmouth (9/2) to the ‘Lane of Pain’ on Sunday afternoon in what can only be described as an interesting fixture. Whether it’s Pompey fans berating Defoe and Redknapp or Spurs fans jeering Adams and Campell there’s sure to be more booing than a pantomime villains convention. On the pitch, a toothless Spurs team will be looking to Defoe to inflict some damage on his former employers. Both teams are winless in five, although Pompey have lost the last four and with home advantage we’d expect Spurs to just shade this fiery encounter. The draw is a 12/5 shot with totesport.
Finally, the Merseyside derby has been reserved for Monday evening, the first of two encounters between the two in a week. Rafa Benitez is reportedly holding off from signing a new contract until he can guarantee he’ll have a say in signings and youth development. After deciding to play Dirk Kuyt up front on his own away to Stoke last weekend all I can say is, good luck with that Rafa! Everton have three straight wins on the road and come here as just the form team between the two. As good as their away record is this season a full strength Liverpool attack should be enough, especially with Everton missing influential midfielder Marouane Fellaini to suspension. The draw is 23/10 with totesport.
Totesport will be betting live in-running on all the weekend’s live football
