Wigan not out for revenge against Spurs
Saturday, February 20th, 2010
Roberto Martinez claims his Wigan Athletic (11/4 to win – match coupon) side have recovered from their Spurs humiliation earlier in the season and will not use that as motivation when the sides clash again on Sunday.
The Spaniard watched in horror back in November as his side capitulated and put on a defensive horror show as Spurs (even to win, 23/10 draw – match coupon) ran out 9-1 winners.
He has said his side are not using revenge as their prime motivation for the return fixture at the DW Stadium, but are focussed on getting points to help their battle to avoid relegation from the Premier League.
Wigan (5/1 FA Premier League relegation 2009/10) sit in 14th position but worryingly are only two points clear of Bolton (12/5 FA Premier League relegation 2009/10) in 18th and Martinez claims his side have dropped too many points so far in the season and are looking to begin rectifying that statistic against Spurs.
“The players are determined going into this one but not because of anything that happened at White Hart Lane,” said the Latics manager.
“Every result is extremely significant and we don’t need any extra motivation to be as good as we can on Sunday.”
Martinez brought Victor Moses (3/1 – Anytime Goalscorer) to Wigan on transfer deadline day and has been careful not to plunge the 19-year-old straight into Premier League action.
He has been used as late substitutes against both Bolton and Sunderland and Moses has said it is a “big step up” coming from the Championship and he is happy to play any part that he can for Wigan.
