Zola pins survival hopes on Cole
Sunday, January 10th, 2010
Gianfranco Zola has said injured striker Carlton Cole holds the key to West Ham preserving their Premier League status (West Ham 1/4 FA Premier League – To Stay Up 2009/2010).
World Cup hopeful Cole (60/1 FA Premier League – Top Goalscorer 2009/2010) has not kicked a competitive ball since the 5-3 Premier League win over Burnley at the end of November last year.
However, Zola revealed the 26-year-old, who has scored seven goals this season, has resumed light training and could be back at the end of January.
His time on the treatment table has coincided with a run of form which sees the Hammers perched just one place above the Premier League relegation zone.
Zola has emphasised the importance of his star striker finding form, fitness and the goals to move the club back up the table.
“His recovery is vital. He is such an important player, not only in terms of goals and what he gives to the team,” said Zola.
“It would be a big boost for the other players and I look forward to seeing him playing soon with us.”
