Casey eyes Memorial joy
Thursday, May 29th, 2008The great Jack Nicklaus hosts this week’s PGA Tour event – the top class Memorial Tournament – where we fancy big hitting Englishman Paul Casey to make some waves.
Casey’s CV boasts two solid efforts at the Ohio layout that traditionally features wide fairways and quick greens. The man with the Popeye forearms gets a 66/1 quote from totesport and that’s well worth an interest. Casey finished 18th here in 2006 and 31st last year but the most solid reason for following him here is Memorial’s similarities to Augusta.
With wide landing areas and quicksilver greens the Nicklaus-designed track generally suits players who do well on the Augusta masterpiece. Those who watched this year’s Masters will concur that Casey looked like a very plausible winner over the first three days.
One of the most important clubs in the bag this week is the driver and with that in mind languid Aussie Geoff Ogilvy gets our second selection. Not many drive it longer and straighter than the 2006 US Open champ. He has course pedigree having finished ninth here last year and proved he is bang in form with a seventh placed finish at Colonial last week. Grab some of that 16/1.
The official PGA Tour’s site is a great resource for statistics and the category labelled “total driving” that combines driving distance with driving accuracy is one to keep an eye on this week.
Boo Weekley currently sits in 10th spot on that list and there is no doubting this guy’s talent when he gets in the mix. Weekley, who says he will only play golf until he has earned enough money to buy a farm, has already won this year at Harbour Town. It must be a very big farm he refers to because he has bagged over $4 million in prize money in less than two seasons.
He is getting better all the time and we confidently expect him to improve on last year’s effort when he finished 29th. Get involved with some of totesport’s 28/1.
