Weekly Golf Betting Preview
Wednesday, August 5th, 2009There’s only one golf tournament worth writing about this week and it’s the third WGC event of the year, the Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone. The worlds best golfers come together for the first time since the Open Championship in Turnberry and they’ll all have one eye on next weeks final major of the season at the US PGA.
We’d usually start this blog off with how Tiger Woods is a very short priced favourite and that you might be best advised to look elsewhere for some value. However the 6/4 about his chances with totesport at a course where he simply has a formidable record he’d be our main pick to take the spoils.
Tiger has won here six times and in two separate three year runs. He didn’t compete last year due to injury but in 2007 he pummeled the field beating Justin Rose into second place a huge eight shots adrift. On two of the other occasions in the last 10 years he didn’t win it he finished tied second and fourth in 2004 and 2003 and although he didn’t need his A-game to win the Buick last week he could well get back to back victories here.
Further down the betting there’s a few picks with good course and recent form that might be worth an each-way bet.
Lee Westwood has had some time off since his Open disappointment and the Englishman comes here a 20/1 shot with totesport after coming close finishing second here last year. Stewart Cink is a winner on this course and should be full of confidence and rest after his win in Scotland three weeks ago, he’s a 33/1 shot.
Phil Mickelson and Retief Goosen are also near the top of the betting but there’s doubts over their claims. Mickelson hasn’t played much competition golf, but in fairness he performed brilliantly at the US Open in similar circumstances. He finished fourth here last year and on best form would be a very big looking 16/1 with totesport.
Goosen on the other hand has seemed to forgotten how to get over the finish line. Four top six finishes in succession but he’s had a chance to win each of these tournaments and his putting has let him down at crucial moments. He’s a 25/1 shot here with totesport and finished fourth here last year.
Finally, Davis Love looks a cracking bet at 50/1. Love has a brilliant record at Bridgestone and six top ten finishes on the trot before missing the tournament last year cannot be ignored. A decent show at the Open to boot and Davis can reward each-way backers.
