Weekly Golf Betting Preview – Race to Dubai
Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009The Race to Dubai this week travels to South Korea for the Ballantine’s Championship at the Pinx Golf Club.
The €2.1m purse has attracted some of world golf’s big names and three of them head the betting. Henrik Stenson is the 11/1 favourite with totesport as he comes here fresh from a week off after the Masters. Stenson is the top ranked player in the field and has had three top ten finishes this season across both tours. If he brings his ‘A’ game he’s sure to be in contention in what looks like will turn out to be a birdie blitz, 24 under being the winning score last year.
Another two big names of World Golf are next in the betting with Ernie Els and Lee Westwood both 15/1 with totesport. They both however look a little skinny in the betting to me with neither having won on the European Tour since 2007. We tipped up Westwood to place at the Masters but he blew up badly in the final round to slip down the field. The Englishman’s getting a reputation for final day failings and for that reason we couldn’t back him, or the out of form Els at these prices this week.
Last years winner Graeme McDowell deserves respect, not least for his course form but he was also the highest finishing European player at the Masters a fortnight ago and his form this season has been pretty solid. McDowell won in a play-off with Jeev Milka Singh twelve months ago and the pair finished seven ahead of the rest of the field. With Singh missing this week, the course form for ‘G-Mac’ cannot be ignored at 16/1.
With course form in mind, Paul McGinley’s an interesting runner at 50/1. He’s been suffering on the greens over the last twelve months, none more so than the first couple of days last week in China but he still managed to scrape together a top-ten finish and was a distant third here last year.
There’s a handful of entries this week who’ve already won in that part of the world on the Asian Tour this season. Johan Edfors and Thongchai Jaidee are both available at 25/1 but disappointed last week in China. Chapchai Nirat, also a 25/1 shot played some decent stuff last week and could go well here.
However, of the Asian Tour winners this term it’s Indian Jyoti Randhawa and American Anthony Kang that catch the eye. Randhawa (33/1) won the Thailand Open in March and has also has two top ten finishes in Malaysia and Indonesia to his name in 2009. Kang currently heads the Asian Tour after winning the Malaysian Open in February and finshed 24th here last year. At 80/1 he looks a value bet for a top five finish.
Keeping the Asian Tour form in mind, there’s a couple of interesting runners at bigger prices that might be a decent each-way bet. Rhys Davies and Simon Griffiths are currently 10th and 12th respectively on the Asian Tour in 2009. Davies (50/1) finished second in the Thailand Open earlier in the year and followed that up with a top ten finish on the European Tour in Andalucia a few weeks ago. Griffiths form in Europe isn’t so good hence the 200/1 about him with totesport but he’s a decent record in Asia with four top 30 finishes including a tied 7th in Indonesia.
Remember, you can now bet each-way on the outright market of any European or PGA Tour golf event and if your selection finishes sixth, on his own, totesport will refund the place part of your stake with a free bet on the following week’s tournaments!
