Weekly Golf Betting Preview – US PGA
Wednesday, April 15th, 2009After the spectacular Masters finish last week, the US Tour resumes this week with the Verizon Heritage at the Harbour Town Links course in South Carolina.
There’s a trio of players at the head of the betting who have all come here straight from Augusta. Jim Furyk has had a second and fourth place finish here in the last three years but blew up on the back nine at the Masters last week when in a good position, eventually finishing tenth. Paul Casey followed up his win at the Shell Houston Open a fortnight ago with a respectable 20th place finish at Augusta. Rory McIlroy completes the trio at the head of the market on the back of a tremendous debut in the Masters. McIlroy tied twentieth which means he’s finished in the top twenty on all four starts in the States this season. These three are all available at 16/1 with totesport but we’ve tried to steer away from the Masters as a form guide for this week’s tournament.
Boo Weekley did play in the Masters but missed the cut. He does have a top ten finish to his name this year way back in January in the Sony Open in Hawaii, but deserves respect here after winning this tournament the last two years. At 33/1 he might be a good each-way bet on a course he clearly likes.
Talking of horses for courses, Davis Love III has won this event five times, the last time in 2003 and his Dad was the teaching pro at the club before his untimely death in a plane crash. At 25/1 Love is another value each-way bet, especially seeing as he’s had a week off after missing the Masters.
A couple of bigger priced fancies who also had last week off are Charles Howell and John Rollins at 40/1 and 80/1 respectively with totesport. Howell has had two top ten finishes to his name in 2009, including a second at the Transitions Championship in March. Rollins has also played some good stuff in 2009, with two second places to his name at the Honda Classic and Buick Invitational. Both men have course form as well finishing 12th and 14th here last year respectively and could go well at big prices.
Remember, you can now bet each-way on the outright market of any European or PGA Tour golf event and if your selection finishes sixth, on his own, totesport will refund the place part of your stake with a free bet on the following week’s tournaments!
