Weekly Golf Betting Preview – US PGA
Thursday, April 23rd, 2009A two over par final round of 74 put paid to our man Davis Love III last weekend at the Verizon Championship when challenging for a place at the start of the day. However, it’s upwards and onwards this week as the US Tour reaches New Orleans, for the
Zurich Classic.
The betting is pretty open as Kenny Perry, fresh from his Masters let down has been installed as 12/1 favourite with totesport. It is second favourite at 14/1 Nick Watney that catches the eye though. Youngster Watney has had a really impressive start to 2009, winning the Buick back in February and finishing second in the WGC-CA to Phil Mickelson. Add to that another top-ten finish and the fact he won this tournament on this course two years ago he really comes here with a fine chance.
We’ve been tipping up Englishmen on the US Tour week in, week out without much success, but with Paul Casey winning the Shell Houston Open a few weeks ago and Luke Donald’s second place finish at the weekend at the Verizon we reckon Justin Rose looks a good bet at 35/1 to continue this trend. Rose has been solid if not spectacular and has a couple of top twenty finishes in the States in ultra competitive fields (Masters and WGC-CA). Add to this a fine second place finish in the Dubai Desert Classic, a bit of luck with the flat stick could see him in the shake up on Sunday.
We tipped up Boo Weekely last week to win a third Verizon in a row but unfortunately old Boo left himself too much to do and despite a final round flourish of 68 that catapulted him thirteen places up the leaderboard on Sunday he still finished out of the places. However, with that birdie blitz very much in mind the 45/1 about Boo’s chances here with totesport could represent some value. Egged on by a partisan ‘deep south’ crowd Weekley’s a good putting week away from a top five finish.
Further down the betting we’ve picked out a couple of players not without a squeak if all goes well. Ken Duke is nothing more than a solid tour pro but his second here to Watney two years ago shows he likes the track and at 50/1 might be worth a bet each-way. Jeff Maggert might be close to plying his trade on the Senior’s Tour but with two top twenty-five finishes to his name so far in 2009 and an 11th/23rd place finish here in the past two years he has form and course experience over the other competitors around him in the betting at 125/1 and represents some value with totesport.
Remember, you can now bet each-way on the outright market of any European or PGA Tour golf event and if your selection finishes sixth, on his own, totesport will refund the place part of your stake with a free bet on the following week’s tournaments!
