Weekly Golf Betting Preview – US PGA
Thursday, April 30th, 2009There’s a stellar field at this weeks Quail Hollow Championship in North Carolina on the PGA Tour. Tiger’s back in action after his final round fireworks at the Masters three weeks ago plus another six of the world’s top-ten lining up alongside him.
As per usual, Tiger’s a short priced favourite at 11/4 with totesport. I’m not convinced he’s back to his imperious best with his game still appearing understandably rusty despite his win at Bay Hill and i wouldn’t be a backer at this short price.
The beauty of a field including Woods is that there’s some value on offer further down the betting. Phil Mickelson is the next best at 9/1 and is arguably in much better nick than the favourite, we’re then looking at 22/1 bar the rest of the field.
So where’s the value? Well, Anthony Kim has a great chance here but I don’t think there’s value backing him at 22/1. Sure, he won this tournament last year and finished placed the year before, but he’s not been in the same league as fellow 22/1 shot Geoff Ogilvy so far in 2009, himself with three top twenty-five finishes in the last three years here.
Further down the betting I like the look of Rory Sabbatini at 33/1. The fiery South African had spent some time in the golfing wilderness but seems to have rediscovered his touch finishing in the top ten in his last two appearances. Add to this some course form when finishing second here two years ago he’s worth an each-way squeak at a good price.
American Charles Howell is another player coming here in good form after finishing second last week in New Orleans, the third top ten finish in 2009. Some steady golf here in the last three years shows he can handle the track and with some luck on the greens could go well at 50/1.
A couple of players bang out of form but with the class to come good any time are available at big prices this week. Vijay Singh and Adam Scott are available at 35/1 and 50/1 respectively with totesport and both have the game to make a mockery of those prices. Singh in fact has shown glimpses of his old self since an early season knee operation finishing 30th last time out. He does have the course form though having won here in 2005 and finishing second two years earlier in 2003. He also finished 7th here two years ago so don’t be surprised for him to get back into winning ways here at a juicy 35/1. Scott on the other hand hasn’t shown any sign of form since January having missed the last few cuts on tour. The Australian does have two top ten finishes to his name here though in the last three years so if he does re-discover some form this week he certainly knows his way around the course.
Finally, he’s been playing just under the radar in the Sates this season but last years European Tour winner Robert Karlsson looks a big price at 66/1 with totesport. The Swede has kept his workload to a minimum so far in 2009, but an encouraging tied 14th at the Shell Houston a few weeks ago sends out the right messages and he has a 24th place finish to his name on this course in his previous visit two years ago. The 66/1 available doesn’t equate to his 11th in the world status and could embarrass some compilers if he gets that hot flat-stick going this week.
If each-way betting is your bag, you can bet each-way on the outright market of any European or PGA Tour golf event and if your selection finishes sixth, on his own, totesport will refund the place part of your stake with a free bet on the following week’s tournaments!
