Irish Derby blog at Curragh and Summer National at Uttoxeter
Friday, June 27th, 2008The big question on Sunday is can New Approach be the first horse since High Chaparral in 2002 to complete the Epsom/Irish Derby double?
Having won three times over the wide open spaces of the Curragh the Jim Bolger colt is well suited by the track. There has been plenty of rain this week which has led to an easing of the going which will favour him.
A more serious question is will he settle? In a relatively steady run race at Epsom, Kevin Manning had an extremely difficult job in getting him to settle and it was only the near miraculous way he found the gaps that enabled him to win.
Denying him his usual front running role at the Curragh may be more difficult. However, Upton Grey in the same ownership has been supplemented, presumably as a pacemaker which should help.
Casual Conquest – a big horse was probably not ideally suited by Epsom. Trainer Dermot Weld considers him to have improved since.
New Approach, a particularly tough type, was clearly the best horse at Epsom and should win again. Casual Conquest is the one for the forecast.
At Uttoxeter, the much-improved stayer Surface To Air looks worth an interest in the Summer National over 4m 0.5f. Jumping well he has been impressive in his last two races and looks as if staying is his game.
