Oaks and Derby update blog
Friday, May 30th, 2008The Oaks on Friday (June 6) is an extremely open looking race with no less than 10 fillies at 14/1 or less.
The Jim Bolger-trained Lush Lashes – as short as 5/2 and not guaranteed to stay – is poor value. Indeed it is quite possible that she may not even run.
The John Oxx-trained Katiyra makes some appeal. She ran a good race in the Derrinstown Stud 1000 Guineas trial at Leopardstown and will be well suited by the step up in distance. She is a filly with loads of scope.
Another worth noting is the John Gosden-trained filly Michita. By Dynaformer she was very impressive in taking the listed Height of Fashion Stakes at Goodwood. Her ability to act with elan around Goodwood bodes extremely well for coping with the demands of Epsom.
The way she accelerated away from her rivals was most impressive and her current price of 10/1 looks good value.
On the Derby front the Dee Stakes winner Tajaaweed has come in for sustained support following some impressive work at Newmarket.
Another to go well on the gallops recently is the Henry Cecil-trained Kandahar Run. His trainer is very pleased with him, feels he will get the trip, and has a serious chance.
Over in Ireland following a recent gallop at Leopardstown, Casual Conquest was cut to 5/2 favourite. He came clear of Unwritten Rule and Winchester over nine furlongs.
Connections will now have to decide whether to supplement him at a cost of GBP 75k.
Dual Guineas winner Henrythenavigator is as short as 4/1. Many feel that a horse showing such speed over 1 mile will not stay, however, his breeding would suggest he should.
His sire has got a St Leger winner and his dam is by Sadler´s Wells.
