Denly relieved by warm-up performance

England’s opening batsman Joe Denly has admitted that it was nice to finally get in amongst the runs as he helped the tourists to an eight-wicket victory over the Warriors.
England (4/1 to beat South Africa in the Twenty20 series winner market) won their second warm-up match ahead of the first Twenty20 game against South Africa on Friday, comfortably sweeping aside the Warriors at the De Beers Diamond Oval on Sunday.
The victory was in large part to Denly and Andrew Strauss’ opening partnership of 175, with the England skipper making an unbeaten 117.
Denly contributed 82 to the innings as England (7/4 to become the ODI series winner) comfortable chased down the Warriors’ total of 225 with 9.1 over to spare.
The Kent batsman’s place in the side is currently under pressure following a poor Champions Trophy, coupled with the return of Kevin Pietersen and the inclusion of Test opener Alastair Cook in the one-day squad.
Denly admits that it was important to get amongst the runs again, but stopped short of saying he felt his place in the side was under pressure.
“It was nice to get out there and spend some time in the middle,” said Denly.
“It is important to get some runs under your belt before the international games start and just have as much time out there as you can.”
