South Africa boost bowling attack
Saturday, January 9th, 2010
South Africa (6/4 fourth Test victory) have called up two uncapped players to boost their bowling attack ahead of the final Test against England.
Skipper Graeme Smith recently claimed his side had a lack of “punch” after they drew the third Test and has responded by calling up paceman Wayne Parnell and leg-spinner Imran Tahir into the squad.
Tahir and Parnell have been named for the final Test in Johannesburg (England 12/5, draw 11/8 in fourth Test) due to concerns over the fitness of Freidel de Wet and Paul Harris, and the Proteas are looking to level the four-match series they currently trail 1-0.
Makhaya Ntini has been dropped from the squad due to poor form in the first two games which saw him left out of the eleven for the third Test.
South Africa selector Mike Proctor said: “This is a must-win Test for us.
“We have covered all our bases as far as the composition of our attack is concerned.”
England (1/2 series victory) coach Andy Flower said after the third Test that consistent selections are vital to the form of the team.
He cited Ian Bell and Paul Collingwood as examples of this, as their match-saving century stand in the third test came after they had played together for over 50 matches.
