Manley wanting to entertain the crowd
Saturday, December 19th, 2009
Peter Manley has come out ahead of his first round match at the World Darts Championship (Manley 4/6 to win on match coupon) to claim he wants more characters in the sport.
‘One Dart’ is due to play Andy Jenkins (11/10 to win on coupon) on Saturday night and the Cumbrian thrower cannot wait to enter the Alexandra Palace to his theme song of ‘Is This the Way to Amarillo’.
Manley (250/1 to win competition on outright coupon) is known throughout the darts world as a player who gets the crowd going and he wants a new breed of stars in the sport to bring atmosphere to events.
The three-time beaten world finalist said: “People coming into darts must ensure they have that bit extra about them. The Wayne Mardles and myself of this world interact with the crowd. You must have characters.
“They have to realise that to take it just as a sport is boring because it has become an event. People want more than that.”
On the first night of the World Darts Championship, Mardle was knocked out by Jyhan Artut, but favourite Phil Taylor (2/7 for the title on outright coupon) eased into the second round past Colin Monk.
