Johnson backs under-fire Wilkinson

Martin Johnson has given his support to under-fire Jonny Wilkinson after naming the same England XV (10/11 in the 80 minute betting) for Saturday’s Six Nations clash with Ireland (10/11 and 16/1 the draw).
The Toulon fly-half has been heavily criticised for his display against Italy, particularly his negative kicking tactics, as England eked out a 17-12 victory to make it two wins from two.
However, Johnson has admitted his surprise at the way the knives have come out for the 2003 World Cup-winning hero and insists that the problems cannot solely be placed on the number 10.
“I find the amount of criticism that has gone Jonny’s way a bit surprising and disappointing. I think it has gone over the top,” said Johnson, who resisted the clamour for Toby Flood to be included.
“Everyone is pointing fingers at Jonny but it is a team issue.
“We had a good chat about it as a group about where we need to improve. There were chances we missed last week. We were effective when we kept the ball in hand.”
England remain in contention for outright glory and are 10/3 to lift the trophy, behind firm favourites France at 1/3, while they are 6/4 to complete the Triple Crown, with Ireland on offer at 13/8 and No Winner at 2/1.
