Kidney keeps faith with XV
Wednesday, March 10th, 2010
Ireland coach Declan Kidney will stick with the same Ireland side (10/1 to win the tournament) that beat England (20/1) last time out as they prepare to host Wales on Saturday in the Six Nations.
Geordan Murphy retains his position at full-back despite Rob Kearney’s return to full fitness after he missed the game at Twickenham while Jonathan Sexton stays at fly-half with Ronan O’Gara on the bench again.
Kearney’s inclusion in the squad means there is no place for Ulster’s Andrew Trimble as he drops out of the 22.
Kidney believes despite Lions star Kearny returning to full fitness he felt Murphy had done enough in his first international start for a year to warrant another game against Wales (11/10 to score over 12.5 tries in the tournament specials).
“I thought Geordan went well against England to warrant a second go,” said Kidney.
“Rob has worked hard to get back but we’ve decided to go with Geordan.”
The other big team news is that skipper Brian O’Driscoll will earn his 100th cap for Ireland (4/11 to win the Triple Crown) just one game after John Hayes had become the first Irishman to reach the landmark.
While Ireland have few injury concerns their opponents haven’t been so lucky with captain Ryan Jones set to miss out with a calf injury.
Jones’ absence mean Martyn Williams will skipper the Wales side for the trip to Croke Park while Gareth Delve will take the number eight shirt for his first international cap since the summer tour to South Africa in 2008.
The good news for Wales is that Matthew Rees is fit enough to start so he replaces Huw Bennett from the 26-20 defeat to France while Luke Charteris comes in at lock in place of Deiniol Jones.
